There was once a young apprentice who entered the world of work carrying a mask—not of deception, but of survival. It was called Professionalism. Smooth, polished, and quiet. The mask helped them fit in, speak less, and smile more. It taught them to nod even when they didn’t understand, and to shrink their truth so others felt comfortable.
At first, the mask felt powerful. It won approval. It avoided conflict. It made them “presentable.” But over time, the apprentice began to feel hollow. Their ideas stayed hidden. Their questions stayed unasked. Their story stayed silent.
One day, in a team meeting, someone asked: “What do you think?” The apprentice hesitated. The mask said, “Say what they want to hear.” But the heart whispered, “Say what you believe.”
So they did.
Their voice trembled, but it was real. Their idea was different, but it was honest. And something shifted. The room didn’t reject them—it leaned in. The mask didn’t fall off—it softened. It became less of a shield and more of a choice.
They learned that professionalism isn’t about hiding who you are—it’s about honoring who you are while respecting others. It’s not silence—it’s self-awareness. Not perfection—it’s presence.
