My name is Nanyanzi Rita, and I am 20 years old, training as a teacher at Bishop Willis Core PTC.
My journey has been filled with challenges and resilience. I lost my mother when I was just two days old and was raised by my father. Growing up, I faced many hardships. I lived with my aunt, whom I thought was my mother. She loved and treated me as her own, but she had to leave to finish her studies. My father then took me to my grandmother’s place when I was in Primary 1. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away, and our family members forced us out. My father, jobless and homeless, took us to my mother’s sister. Life there was tough; my aunt was abusive, and I often missed school to complete domestic chores.
I tried to run away, and my father took me to his brother’s house, but the situation didn’t improve. I studied without materials, sometimes cutting books into small pieces to make do. In Primary 6, my father had an accident, and I had to dig for people to earn food. Despite the hardships, I persevered. I faced an attempted assault but remembered my father’s advice to stay strong for a better future.
In Primary 7, I went to boarding school, but without financial support, I had to wash clothes for friends to get essentials. In secondary school, I struggled even more, using banana fibers as pads and stealing a mop to manage my periods. My father had another accident, and I had to take my Senior 4 exams on loan, promising to pay later.
After completing my exams, I worked as a housemaid for the Minister of Tourism in Busoga. With the money I earned, I paid off my loan and started my current course. I am grateful to those who supported me, including Madam Namutamba Hellen, Mr. Kikulira Musa, my aunt, and my dear father, who is my hero.
I am especially thankful to the Family Concepts Center for giving me the opportunity to share my life story with an audience. Through this platform, I touched many hearts and left many people in tears. Because of this, I received kind support from a person moved by my story, which has enabled me to complete my course as a teacher. I owe my accomplishments to those who believed in me and supported me along the way.
