In the past, I would discover an opportunity and then spend hours researching, trying to figure out what exactly they needed and how I could somehow show up exactly as that! I would twist myself into knots trying to figure out who I needed to be in order to be hired.
Then I discovered storytelling and realized that if I could tell a powerful story, that was enough. I realized that as long as my story is strong, one of two things will happen. Either they’ll hear my story and realize that I’m right for them and they’ll hire me. Or the story will show them that the fit is not right. And that’s perfect, because if I had tried to become what they wanted, no matter what I could have done or said, it would not have worked out. I may have gotten the job, but I would have been miserable, and it wouldn’t have lasted.
This way, using stories, I am relaxed, and confident. I can communicate clearly and in a way that resonates with the clients that are perfect for me. And selling my expertise becomes easy, and yes, fun.
